Narrative
In flashbacks, a family joins a cosmic cult, promising salvation on Jupiter
As their past unravels their struggles, their teenage daughter must choose whether to follow her parents into the cult or forge her own path on Earth. Jupiter Ascended (2019).
It is a dizzying landscape and space that borders on sci-fi, even psychological horror
"Jupiter" is a finely crafted film that manages to draw us into the inner world of a teenage girl, as she grapples not only with the challenges of insecurity, but also with the trials of her disabled younger brother and her parents' descent into madness. During the discussion after the film, I thought the first comment was one of empathy for the parents.
I even noted that many adults are helpless
I had to counter that in the madness and horror of the world, children are tragically and inexplicably ignored. The director insisted that they should be reintegrated into a „good democratic society” and even that they have not forgotten their horrific deeds (well-intentioned).
Despite this, his film feels less like a dissection of the vulnerability of adults in dire straits than an ode to the vulnerability of children
